Smallest cuts – smallest scars with extension via internal leg extension systems
The internal leg lengthening system BETZBONE® is used in our clinic. This distraction nail was developed and perfected by us. BETZBONE® is an internal leg extension system. We emphasize this because this system – like all internal systems for leg lengthening – has nothing to do with leg lengthening using external fixators. When we talk about the smallest cuts, this only concerns internal leg extension systems. To be specific: When inserting the implant, the extension nail, into the bone, only 4 small incisions are necessary on the outside of the thigh. After the leg extension has been completely consolidated, small, barely visible scars often remain.
Devastating scarring from external fixators
There are also still leg lengthening performed using external fixators. With this leg lengthening method, leg lengthening is carried out using an apparatus that is attached to the leg. Numerous screws, pins and wires have to be drilled through the legs, skin, tissue, soft tissue and muscles all the way to the bone. Due to the lengthening process, these materials inevitably move apart and tear the skin, cutting through the skin in every area where the wires, pins, screws, etc. pass through. The skin does grow back together, but this process causes and leaves behind devastating wounds Scar. Not just from an aesthetic point of view.
