Dr. Axel Becker is a specialist in leg lengthening, a specialist in plastic, aesthetic and reconstructive surgery, a specialist in orthopedics and trauma surgery and carries out cosmetic leg lengthening in his special clinic in Freiburg. For this purpose – only here – a minimally invasive leg lengthening method BETZBONE®, developed by him and unique in the world, is used.

What is BETZBONE®? Why was BETZBONE® developed?
BETZBONE® is the name of the internal extension nail used during a minimally invasive leg lengthening operation in the Freiburg specialist clinic by Dr. Becker is used. It is important to emphasize that in our clinic we only work with this method – although there are also other leg lengthening methods and other internal leg lengthening systems. However, no other leg extension system has completely convinced us. Helping people gain height has been our specialty for many years. We wanted to develop an optimal system that would bring the greatest possible benefit and the lowest possible risk of complications for our patients. At the same time, our goal was: After the leg lengthening operation, patients should be able to walk independently again immediately and not have to rely on a wheelchair for months.
The BETZBONE® extension nail fulfills these and many other positive properties. Developed and perfected by Dr. med. Axel Becker and Prof. Dr. Augustin Betz at the BECKER BETZ INSTITUTE Freiburg. Today, this leg extension system is unique in the world in terms of its function and material properties.
You can find out the three essential aspects of this leg extension system here.

With the BETZBONE® leg lengthening technique, you can stand on your legs and walk again immediately after the procedure
“After leg lengthening, you sit in a wheelchair for months and are immobile?” Yes, this certainly applies to some leg lengthening techniques, but not to leg lengthening with BETZBONE®. Of course, all of our patients appreciate this advantage. Patients we operate on stand up immediately after the minimally invasive procedure, can walk, are mobile and do not sit in a wheelchair. This means that our patients only need the support of forearm supports for a certain period of time.
Why you can run immediately after leg lengthening surgery with the BETZBONE® lengthening technique
The immediate mobility after leg lengthening surgery is essentially due to the fact that the BETZBONE® lengthening nail is fully weight-bearing. However, with lengthening techniques that are not fully weight-bearing, you lie in bed or use a wheelchair and therefore have an extremely high risk of developing thrombosis or embolism. Not so with leg extensions with BETZBONE®. In our videos you can see patients walking independently again on the day of the operation.

The BETZBONE® leg lengthening implant cannot rust. That’s a given with implants…. No it’s not.
It goes without saying that an implant that is implanted into my body, into my legs, will not rust. Many people think so. Unfortunately, we have to say: Implants can pose the risk that they will interact with the body, i.e. rust, i.e. be subject to corrosion and thus have far-reaching and serious consequences in terms of wound healing disorders, foreign body reactions and infections. The question arises: can the risk of material corrosion in implants be reliably eliminated and if so, how?
Short answer: Yes – that’s exactly what we did with BETZBONE®. We solved the corrosion problem of extension implants like this:
The BETZBONE® implant is made of 100% chrome-cobalt, a material that cannot rust. Can we prove this? Yes we can.
And as follows:
We have demonstrably seen no signs of damage to the implants that we have removed and meticulously examined after they have been in the body for around 2 years. The implant is absolutely free of rust or signs of corrosion. Our conclusion after many years of observation and use is: The BETZBONE® implant made of chrome-cobalt does not interact with the body or with body fluids and does not lead to any corrosion/rust formation.

Click control during leg extension is very easy and very safe with the BETZBONE®
If you have had a leg lengthening implant implanted, any lengthening performed by the patient must also be documented by the patient. This can be complex and tedious, but with the BETZBONE® it is very comfortable and easy. Here’s how it works: The extension mechanism of the BETZBONE® implant is designed so that the extension is activated independently by the patient by means of a targeted rotation (lower leg/thigh). This means that every rotation causes an audible click. And every click means an extension of exactly 0.052 mm. An audible click corresponds to an extension of the implant or the thigh by exactly 0.052 mm. This 0.052mm per extension click is consistent and reliable. So every click the leg lengthening patient performs results in an extension of 0.052 mm. There is no easier or better way for patients to document their extension.
