Weight-bearing leg lengthening systems – what does this mean or in other words, what if leg lengthening systems and nails are not weight-bearing?
If a leg lengthening implant does not fully support one’s own body weight, i.e. is not fully weight-bearing, this means that the patient cannot put weight on the extended leg and is not allowed to step on the leg.
In other words: the other, non-extended leg must support/balance the weight. At the same time, the non-extended leg must be constantly adjusted to the lengthening process of the other leg to ensure a tie. This is often done with platform shoes. For patients, this means a lengthy and arduous leg lengthening process and many other disadvantages, which we summarize in two points:
Point 1: If the extension nail for a leg extension is not fully weight-bearing, both legs can never be extended at the same time. Unless the patient tolerates sitting in a wheelchair and being confined to bed – i.e. not mobile – during the leg lengthening process.
Point 2: Only after the extended leg has been consolidated can the second leg be extended. This means that the time of the entire leg lengthening process is doubled and means: double lengthening time, double pain, double training, longer medication.
